Writing for a single individual

Nov 01, 2006

I just read an interesting post at Successful Blog where Liz suggests that our posts should address to a “one single individual”, the individual that reads our posts carefully, and seriously intends to learn or absorb something from them.

This is because blogs are conversational and I definitely agree with that. Conversations are most effective when they take place one-one. It’s easier to talk to a person rather than a group of diverse individuals. And this helps you narrow down your audience. There is a micro benefit and there is a macro benefit.

The micro benefit is it improves your writing and you have more ideas to talk about. It seems an uphill task to think up a topic everyday for your blog because you’re always worried whether people are going to like it or not. This doesn’t usually happen when you have to address a single individual. You can just relax and write for that particular individual.

The macro benefit is that it helps you narrow down your niche readership. It’s been well-established that the numbers just don’t matter. If 2000 people come to your blog and only 20 of them read the whole post and if 30 people come to your blog and 20 among them read the whole post you should definitely go for the latter group.

    Hi Liz.

Thanks for dropping by. I try to visit your blog regularly but these days in general I’m surfing less and concentrating more on work and writing.

  3. How to write for the people

[...] Generally, just writing as you write, imagining, as if you are writing for a single person, will allow to phrase your thoughts coherently and remember about the text formatting. [...]
