What is easier? Creating linkbait content or requesting people to link to you?
May 12, 2008
I was thinking about increasing traffic on my websites, especially this blog and my copywriting and content writing website. I fare well on the search engines for some good keywords and expressions, but they are a selected few, and I’m working on optimizing my website for other keywords too (there are more than 40 keywords my website must rank high on, and doesn’t, yet).
But it’s not just generating content, you also need links from other blogs and websites to achieve more traffic, both from search results and direct links. I never feel comfortable (actually, never done that) approaching people to put my link on their blogs or websites. Comments etc. too I don’t leave any (I plan to focus on that) and I don’t participate much on online forums (I plan to focus on that too). But the thing that I like the most is producing content, and I think that’s the best of generating incoming links. In the near future I plan to write a lot for my website, and also for other blogs and websites.
Exchanging links or requesting people for links actually demands greater effort. Write an excellent blog post or a well-researched article and many people will voluntarily link to you. What do you think?

I’ve had lots of success with writing content. But I write a lot and have been at it for almost 4 months now, and I think the WordPress platform has had a lot to do with coming up often on the first page of Google.
I have three comments on why I think writing articles works:
- I also do a lot of article marketing, and submit my blog posts to Blog Carnivals.
- It takes time, but more importantly, it takes a lot of articles around one subject. Writing on different angles on one main subject.
- As you write lots of articles, you will find certain articles bring in more traffic. So you will know what type of article to write to get more traffic.
I’m not that comfortable about asking for links in any way. But you do see three different types of people online:
- the busy ones or those not into the online networking,
- the people who are over aggressive and linking or forcing links all over the place with nothing really related to your website,
- and occasionally you will find people who have a healthy, polite, “normal” attitude to social networking. I tend to give those people back twice as much.
I think the right mixture is to keep writing content, do a little social networking of your own, leaving pertinent and friendly comments as regularly as you can on relevant websites. Give it a couple of months, and then the linking happens naturally.

You are a good writer, creating linkbait works for you. I write well, but most of the time, I am clueless about what keywords I should be using.
Its a complete miracle that my site lands up first for some kinds of searches for some words I do want, but I can’t really figure out what it is I did to achieve that, and duplicate the effort with other words I want - they are also there on the pages….. but nothing happens…..
I read your blog regularly, I would appreciate it if you would write a post about how to identify keywords that are easier to work with or ….. uh…. something that could help me understand this process better.
