Top 10 Mistakes in Web Design
Jan 13, 2007
Although it depends on your person proclivities regarding what’s a design mistake, here’s an educational post that talks about the Top 10 Mistakes in Web Design that people still kept making in 2006. The same points can be applied in blog designs too because after all, your blog is but a website.
The main points are:
- Bad search. Most websites don’t pay attention to the search functionality. Rather than focusing on how many words the query has, the results should focus on the relevance of the information being looked for.
- PDF files for online reading. The author says the PDF files are very inconvenient for online browsing and people shouldn’t be made to open PDF files through their browsers as PDF files are better fit for big manuals and for taking printouts. PDF files are horrible for navigation purposes. In fact I use a PDF file on my content writing and copywriting website but after reading this I’ll change it to a simple HTML/PHP page as having it as a PDF doesn’t really solve a purpose anyway.
- Not changing colors of visited links. In fact I had this feature in my previous template but not this one. I think I’ll incorporate it now. It’s a good way of telling the visitor what links he or she has already visited.
- Non-scannable text. This is something that lacks in many blog posts. Non-scannable text is when you don’t use bullets, highlighted text, shorter paragraphs etc.
- Fixed font size. OK, it’s Saturday and I’m a bit drunk, so you can read the remaining points at the link mentioned above :-).
