Talk To Your Readers Through Your Blog

Jan 06, 2007

Successful blogging is all about getting your readers involved in whatever you are saying, because that’s what keeps them coming back to your blog. I’ve observed some blogs are very didactic — the authors are just interested and telling their readers: do this, do that, I’m the guru, I’ve been there, done that, so feel awed and keep coming for more gems. Funny thing is, some of such blogs really do well, and readers do keep going there again and again, on a daily basis. But there is a reason.

Bloggers that don’t engage their readers, and are still successful in their blogging endeavors, have already made a mark in some other field, or their content is so compelling that you can’t just resist going there.

Your lack of fame, or lack of great nuggets of wisdom shouldn’t prevent you from running a successful blog. There are many bloggers who don’t have much to say, but still have a following, and that is because they engage their readers. They are constantly talking to their readers and encouraging them to give their own opinion.  In order to talk to your readers:

  • Write as if you are talking to some particular person, some friend, preferably.
  • Write in a conversational tone, not like a BBC documentary script.
  • Ask questions from your readers.
  • Prompt them to give answers.
  • Give a feedback when they leave comments.
  • Praise them if they give a praiseworthy feedback.
  • Visit their blogs if they leave their links (this is not a hint for the spammers).

Heh. Well different people have different takes on the word “Blogging”. Some treat it as a very powerful conversation and feedback tool, while others treat it just as an instant publishing machine.

There is no right or wrong, but my take is that blogs are best for conversations, simply because other CMS software don’t do it! At least, until they are required to register an account with the software :P
