A few weeks ago Technorati published its quarterly State of the Blogsphere. Up till October 2006 the Technorati data said they are tracking 57 million blogs…and counting.
Later on in a section they have tried to gauge the influence of blogs by the number of inbound links they get. The more inbound links a blog gets, say, in 6 months, the more authoritative and influential it is.

But this Contentious post rightly disputes the logic. Some blogs get linked to irrespective of what they publish, especially the celebrity, gossip and weird things blogs. They make no sense and they not authoritative. People just link to them.
