How to blog better

Oct 06, 2006

Blogging is all about readers. Who would be interested in getting educated about your sleeping patterns other than your mom, or your wife? OK, it’s a different matter if you are Angelina Jolie.

If you want to blog better, give your readers something that interests them. It can be anything: technology updates, celebrity gossip, political propaganda, social equality — something that touches their lives in one way or another. Whenever you are writing a new post, keep this at the forefront of your consciousness: how is it going to be useful to my readers?

People visit various blogs for various reasons. But the point is, they must have a reason to visit your blog, otherwise they won’t come. That’s why it is very essential to define your niche as early as possible and stick to it. For instance, my content writing blog is mostly for people who want to learn or share things about content writing or blog publishing. So it’s always my prerogative to make sure my readers find something stimulating in my posts. If I cannot come up with something, I try to post links that they may find useful. For instance, this blog post was triggered by Brian’s post titled Give Me 3 Minutes and I’ll Make You a Better Blogger where he rightly says that all blog posts should be readers-centric; they should be written keeping your readers in your mind.

I’m not saying all blogs have to be entertaining or educational or preachy. Some blogs are highly personal in nature, but they are written in such a captivating manner that they touch the emotional chords of their readers and the readers relate to them so much that they regularly visit those blogs. Here too, they are satisfying a need of the readers; they are expressing thoughts the readers would like to express but due to some reason cannot express. So give your readers a reason to visit your blog and if you can do that, you can become a better blogger.
