Everyone is a photo journalist, gruesome sometimes

Dec 04, 2006

There is a post on GigaOm regarding an article in the New York Times that says Yahoo and Reuters will be showcasing photographs and videos of news events submitted by the public.

News channels in India have been experimenting with this sort of “citizen journalism” with some really gory results. For instance when the Bombay blasts took place many people sent coverage from their camera phones and in their race to be more sensational and “the firsts” the news channels broadcast those clips without editing them. It was gross. But I’m not totally averse to this idea. What do you think?

There has to be certain guidelines in regards to what footage can be shown. WITNESS deals with Human Rights footage, much of which can be very gory/disturbing and inappropriate or compromises the safety and security of not only the people in the footage but also the person who shot the video. Read our blog about a video that exposes a child soldier’s identity at http://www.globalvoicesonline.org/2006/10/20/video-exposes-child-soldiers-identity/

Yes, there definitely should be some regulation and there should be this self-sustaining code of conduct and verification…as it happens with the WikiPedia or as it used to happen at pre-spamming Digg where users could blacklist a link if it was not up to the mark or a spoke a lie.
