Does blogging make money?

Aug 30, 2006

I was just now reading Guy Kawasaki’s Observations of a Nouveau Blogger, and although he must have mentioned it in a light vein, this portion got me thinking:

It’s hard to make money blogging. The advertising revenues don’t add up to much, but there are other significant rewards like helping people change the world…

Well, I’ve been thinking of changing the world for a long time and one major change I’ve envisaged for myself is (as some wise one said: charity begins at home), make money.

So does blogging make money?

It does for a few bloggers. Darren at ProBlogger tells people how to become rich blogging and he backs the claim by talking about how much money he makes blogging.

Many people in the past have become rich selling tools that are supposed to make people rich; remember the gold rush? People really got rich, but mostly those selling tools to dig out the gold. The top Amway earners became rich selling info products (cassettes, videos, seminars) that taught people how to become rich selling Amway products. So yes, there are certain niche blogs that really earn good money. Steve Pavline at this blog often writes in his posts that he makes good money writing his blog. In fact he has got an excellent blog post on How to make money from your blog. Of course, the guys at TechCrunch are getting richer by the day.

Can anybody earn money blogging

I believe yes. There are many ways of earning money through your blog:

  • Earning advertising revenue (the toughest I suppose)
  • Selling subscription based content
  • Syndicating your blog content to other online/offline publications
  • Promoting your products and services
  • Building your corporate brand
  • Impressing rich prospective partners

Currently my blog helps me promote my content writing/copywriting services. My clients feel happy when they read my blog posts and they feel assured I’m here for a long innings. Traffic too is gradually increasing because of my blogs. Right now I’m not thinking about advertising revenue but I know it is not a far-fetched idea: I just need to constantly generate relevant content that can fetch me relevant traffic.

Good thoughts, Amrit. Keep generating that content in the form of blog posts, comments at other blogs, emails, etc., and you should see an upward growth curve in traffic, mindshare and even revenue.

    Hi Easton.

Nice to see you on my blog. Yes, right now my focus is only to generate good, relevant content, and if possible, lots of it. I’m also visiting more and more blogs/websites and leaving comments but the greater reason is to read other thoughts and then make myself react to those thoughts.

Although I’ve put ads in the beginning itself but it’s just a habit because I’ve been blogging for many years without being serious about it. This time around I’d like to track the performance from start.
