Do Technorati tags solve any purpose?

Are Tags Working? asks Lorelle at The Blog Herald. I started using Technorati tags to increase traffic and I’ve been using them for many months now. Although I don’t have the right data to know how they have impacted my traffic (I hardly get any), I implemented them after reading numerous recommendations and I try to use the tags as appropriately as possible.

Tagging means assigning keywords to your posts so that when people search for those keywords on Technorati (if you ever use Technorati to search — I do) you blog gets found. The problem with these tags is, as Lorelle rightly points out, that anybody can use them with any sort of post, whether the tags are relevant for the post or not. This is a problem, but I don’t think it is a deterrent because now that I’m writing this, I do remember my stats often showing incoming traffic from Technorati. But then, if Technorati is pinged no matter whether you use the tags or not, what’s the use of using them and wasting precious space on your blog posts?

   It does seem like the Technorati system could be a bit more efficient. I have been skeptical of the power promised by all the blog directories and pingers out there. Although they do have their value. Right now I would say the best tactic is to sign up, use the links, and put your head down. A lot of time can be wasted waiting for traffic that never comes.

   Hi Ryan. I think one should never waste time waiting for traffic because traffic takes its own time provided you are consisting with generating relevant blog content and carrying out small things like commenting on other blogs and linking to them.
   Regarding Technorati, I think many people use the websites to find relevant blog posts while researching and writing. I use it. But I use Google Blog search more.

   Doesn’t take much effort to do, and any extra wanderers you get via Technorati can’t be a bad thing. I’m still not understanding StumbleUpon though - anyone want to enlighten me? (here or elsewhere)

   Hi Dan.
   StumbleUpon is being praised by many SEO experts as they it can drive tons of traffic and it is a good digg and other traffic generating websites. Specific content is being generated for StumbleUpon. I have used it during my spare time (I never seem to get spare time though) but till now haven’t considered it for traffic generation.

   But like the categories that DIGG has foisted upon us, I find that most of my postings (or even others that I find) don’t fit in the most popular (or only in the case of DIGG) categories provided.
   Hmm - still need to experiment with it. Per your comment, what do you mean by “used it during my spare time” rather than “considering it for traffic generation” ?
   Do you mean using it for your own purposes and for some level of sharing rather than explicitly using it for traffic generation?
