The Ingredients of Internet Success

Rand at SEOMoz refers to an article in Wired titled How Yahoo! Blew It. The article talks about Yahoo’s CEO Terry Semel and about how Yahoo! constantly fumbled and got left behind in the search engine marketing game, by Google.

Rand rightly says that more than technology (although technology was at the crux of Google’s success), it was a combination of focus, a good and simple interface, viral marketing strategy and an early innovation that propelled Google ahead of Yahoo!

Does Using Feedburner Increase Your Traffic?

Dec 11, 2006 2 Comments »

It does, according a post at PhoenixRealm SEO. I wonder how. Using Feedburner surely makes it easy for your visitors to subscribe to your RSS feeds and it is probably the best way to disseminate your blog content. RSS feeds, or let’s say Feedburner feeds surely can bring repeat traffic, but how does using Feedburner bring you more unique visitors? Or perhaps because, as the author says:

Feedburner also has plenty of options to optimise and publisise your RSS feed, and gives interesting stats on subscriber readers and aggregators amongst other things.

I haven’t played with Feedburner much, but I think I should.

New York Times Joins The Bandwagon of Social Bookmarking

Dec 11, 2006 No Comments »

The New York Times

The New York Times is taking social bookmarking seriously according to a TechCrunch post. The paper will let readers bookmark stories using social bookmarking websites such as Digg, Facebook and Newsvine. I think this is a major sign of recognition being given to the new media (blogging, social bookmarking, etc.) by the old media.

According to Christine Topalian, manager of strategic planning and business development at NYTimes.com,

The paper had been looking for ways to tap a tech-savvy audience that is accustomed to commenting on and sharing news stories.

This could also usher a new change in the perspective of such social bookmarking websites. Till now they’ve only focused on technology, politics and sensational topics. For instance, there is no category for content writing or online copywriting at Digg.com. With newspapers entering into the fray, more varied topics will be covered now. Gigaom too has written about this.

Who Is An SEO Copywriter?

Dec 10, 2006 No Comments »

If you are a copywriter who can write search engine optimized content then you can call yourself an seo copywriter. There are three types of work profiles behind the success of an online business:

  1. A web developer/designer
  2. An seo expert
  3. A copywriter

An seo expert is primarily concerned with the search engine relevance. He or she is more bothered about how well your website ranks in the search engines.

A copywriter, on the other hand, is concerned more about the message the reader is going to read. He or she wants to write the copy in a manner that influences the reader and incites actions like buying or subscribing or hiring.
