Another Reason You Shouldn’t Get Too Crazy About Your Page Rank

Oct 25, 2007 3 Comments »

According to this link at TechCrunch Google is drastically reducing the page rank of blogs and websites that deal with selling and buying links just to manipulate their page rank. This is the reason you shouldn’t indulge in manipulating your rankings and SEO factors. You should let things work naturally and just focus on generating quality content. People indulge in artificial methods only when they don’t have something real to offer. Just think it this way: what is the use of raising traffic to your blog or website if there is not much there to read or view? If you have quality content then people will come to your blog or website on their own provided you create a positive buzz around your Internet property.

This should also act as a reminder, that don’t make your online business hinge on just a few factors. For example don’t just depend on Google for your traffic; derive traffic from other websites and search engines too. Agreed, that Google can really affect your traffic and the best way of countering it is never to build your blog or website primarily for Google. Consider Google just as an added advantage. Work on ranking higher on other search engines too and list your link in as many relevant online directories as possible. Generate lots of quality content so that other websites and blogs link to you naturally, at their own discretion.

Having said that, Google needs good content to remain in the business. So the search engine company is not doing any favor by sending traffic your way and neither does it want to bully you to follow its guidelines. It just tries to improve its search policy to provide the best results to its users so that its users keep coming back to conduct more searches. Focus on your content, focus on usability, focus on quality, and focus on networking, and let the other things happen naturally.

Incidentally, some blogs like Copyblogger (from PR6 to PR4) and Problogger (from PR6 to PR4) don’t even sell links from their websites and still their PR rankings have been dropped. Search Engine Land has comprehensive information on the topic.

Does Reciprocal Linking Really Matter?

Sep 10, 2007 3 Comments »

A few hours ago I was writing a blog post for a client on the benefits of reciprocal linking. When I was researching on the topic I found many articles and blog posts listing its benefits and things you should take care of while exchanging links with other webmasters and bloggers. I myself get link exchange requests now and then for my content writing website. I have a page dedicated to reciprocal linking but I haven’t updated it for a long time.

What’s your experience with reciprocal linking? Does it enhance your search engine rankings?

All these Social Networking Websites

Jul 07, 2007 3 Comments »

Social Networking

Why are there all of a sudden so many social networking websites popping up like the rain drops in a rainy season. According to a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey more than half (55%) of all online American youths ages 12-17 use online social networking sites.

Within a search of two minutes I found the following websites:

This WikiPedia link has a massive list of social networking websites.

All these websites provide business and social networking and interaction tools. And if you believe the trend, many of these websites are great hits among the young as well as the professionals. Amazingly, some of them are outright silly. Take for instance Twitter. It beats logic why people would even visit the website, leave alone use it for leaving ultra-boring messages. An average MySpace page is so gross to look at.

Some SEO experts are already suggesting you to invest your time on these websites to generate quality traffic to your websites and blogs? But is it really worth it? Depends on what sort of traffic you want and how much spare time you have got. If you are a big company or a rich entrepreneur, sure you can hire someone to interact on these websites on your behalf because extra traffic doesn’t harm (if you can bear the bandwidth cost). But if are a one-man-woman team then every minute you spend promoting your service is precious. Maintaining social networking website can easily turn out to be a time consuming affair.

But Social Networking Websites are not useless

Social networking websites, if used correctly, can definitely help you build brand awareness and create the right buzz for your service or product, especially for services and products that would appeal to the frequenters of these websites. The power of social media websites lies in the massive amount of traffic they generate. Currently numerous films and other entertainment programs are being promoted through various social media websites.

Target less competitive long tail keywords and get more traffic

Jun 14, 2007 4 Comments »

Apart from targeting your niche keywords that might be highly competitive, you should also optimize your web page content and blog posts for less competitive keywords, especially if you have just started your search engine optimization drive. Your niche keywords are important and you should always continue optimizing your content for them, but along with that, it doesn’t harm if you also target partially related, or very specific keywords. For instance, if your business is “rental cars” you shouldn’t only focus on the phrase “rental cars”; you can also target “ac rental cars” or “finding rental cars in new delhi” (if you operate in New Delhi) or even “how much does it cost to rent a car in new delhi”. These are also called long tail keywords, as they get you lots of traffic, but in smaller quantities.

Focusing on long tail keywords will help you  at three fronts:

  • Your website will start getting relevant traffic sooner for long tail keywords
  • You’ll have to pay less if you opt for pay-per-click search engine advertising for long tail
  • Conversion rate will be higher
