This link has lots of them. Although I prefer creating my own templates, sometimes it’s better to start working on an already existing template.

People Are Still Using FrontPage

Jan 25, 2007 No Comments »

And not only the non-professionals. I asked my client whether it would be alright if he could give me his FTP login information so that I could upload his altered files. His reply was that since he uses FP (FrontPage) and not FTP, he could give me the FP information. After explaining to him that FP and FTP are two different things and the FTP information would be the same no matter what one uses to upload the files, I just, out of curiosity, asked him why he used FP to work on his website?

Essential Tools for Bloggers

Jan 24, 2007 No Comments »

OK, this is not to dissuade you from blogging, but here is a list of essential tools every blogger should have and I don’t agree with most of them. The most essential tools a blogger needs are:

  • A good blogging software (WordPress, for instance)
  • A reliable host to run your blog coupled with a domain, of course.
  • A good wordpressor; if you cannot afford MS Word, you can download OpenOffice.org that is as good as MS Office. And there are plenty of Web 2.0 word processors available online, for instance Google Docs, Zoho or AjaxWrite.

Of course if you want to run a photo blog then you need a decent digital camera and an image editor. But it beats me why you need expensive software like Dreamweaver and Photoshop CSS to run a successful blog. And why on earth you need an LCD screen?

A quintessential aspect of blogging is that anybody with a net connection can do it. You don’t need expensive gadget, you don’t need expensive software. Yes, you must have lots of things to say :-).

Prototype 1.5.0 Released and Has Its Own Website Now

Jan 19, 2007 No Comments »

If you dabble with Ajax (I do, sometimes) you’d be happy to know that Prototype 1.5.0 has just been released. As the website says:

Prototype is a JavaScript Framework that aims to ease development of dynamic web applications.

I’ve used Prototype on one of my clients’ website and it really rocks. A big problem was that there was no official documentation for it and you had to scrounge the Internet for tid-bits of tips and tutorials. Fortunately, now they have complete section dedicated to Prototype documentation.

You Shouldn’t Be Obsessed With Perfect Markup

Jan 18, 2007 No Comments »

I personally know what such an obsession can do. Actually for a few months I got into this rut of creating web pages that strictly adhered to the W3C standards. Creating DIV-based layouts became an excruciating pain for me and I cannot even imagine how many hours I must have spent trying to align everything and going through hundreds of tutorials teaching the same thing in hundreds of ways. Sparingly using tables for creating layouts is not that bad, after all.

Modern Life is Rubbish has published a post titled Web Standards Don’t Matter (As much as you think) and I tend to agree with them. I mean standards are good and they make your website and blog compliant to various browsers and screens, but why waste hours trying to make your website look good in a browser being used by merely 3 geeks. Why create a drab layout so that it looks good in browsers made in 1994?

So recently I re-stared using tables; not as much as I used to, for DIVs have their own advantages. I try to follow the standards as much as I can but don’t spend much time over trivial things.
