Building a blog audience
Sep 06, 2006
Building a vibrant blog audience is not as difficult as it seems and not as easy as it seems, too. To be frank, this is a subject that has the potency to make or break your blogging efforts because after all, what’s the use of writing everyday on your blog if not many people can find your postings?
Easton Ellsworth of Business BlogWire just gave an interview to BolderBlogs on how you can build and increase a blog audience. Here’s the summary of how Easton works towards building his own blog audience:
- When you launch a new blog, visit the other good blogs covering your topic and gather a few ideas from there.
- Write 10 or 20 posts and then launch your blog.
- Let everybody — like other blogs, for instance — concerned know about your new blog.
- Participate constructively in the discussions on other blogs and use comment tools like coComment to track your comments.
- Subscribe to relevant RSS feeds.
- Generate good blog content, non-stop.
I’ve been writing blogs since time immemorial (I created a Blogger template for a client back in 2002 I think) but building a blog audience is something that I’ve been cataclysmically ignoring (consequently, this has stunted many a blogging effort in the past) and now I regret that. Anyway, Easton has made some good points and they are going to help a lot. In addition to that I’d like to add:
- Encourage visitors to subscribe to your own feeds.
- Ask them to subscribe to your newsletter that posts your regular, updated feeds.
- Keep in regular touch with your existing visitors.
- Post free, useful articles to online article repositories.
- Try to be an expert of your topic.
- Organize memes.
