Blogging’s Big Mess

Dec 24, 2006

Says Computer World. Gartner recently prophesied blogging will peak in 2007 and Technorati claims there are 1,75,000 new blogs everyday. Where is blogging heading to? I think even if the quantity peaks (after fad value tapers down), the quality will increase. The numbers may slow down, but there will be more reliability. More and more people will rely on blogs for trustworthy news and the mainstream media will lose some of its glitter — it has already lost a lot. During the recent natural disasters blogs played pioneering roles in organizing the relief work, gathering funds and mobilizing volunteers and resources, whether it was the Asian tsunami or Katrina.

It’ll remain as the people’s media but more prolific commentators will join the fray. Journalists, even those who snigger at the reach of blogs, will start using them to further their careers or to break news. Schools will encourage blogging among students and teachers. With privacy options becoming a norm among various blogging tools relatives will use blogs to keep each other updated about what’s happening in their lives. Suppressed societies, as it is already happening in Iran, will use blogs to reach out to the more open societies. So all in all, I think blogging as a concept has a great future, if done in the right manner. It will keep giving voice to people who remain unheard.
