People Are Still Using FrontPage

Jan 25, 2007 No Comments »

And not only the non-professionals. I asked my client whether it would be alright if he could give me his FTP login information so that I could upload his altered files. His reply was that since he uses FP (FrontPage) and not FTP, he could give me the FP information. After explaining to him that FP and FTP are two different things and the FTP information would be the same no matter what one uses to upload the files, I just, out of curiosity, asked him why he used FP to work on his website?

How To Increase Your RSS Subscribers

Jan 24, 2007 No Comments »

Your RSS subscribers are the best indication of how popular your blog is. If your visitors like what you publish, then they obviously want to keep track of what you publish next. And getting email notifications is quite bothersome. Subscribing to RSS feeds is the most popular way of reading multiple blogs in an organized manner. For instance, in my Bloglines account I have over 120 blog RSS subscriptions.

Providing RSS feeds is a great way of not only getting repeat traffic, but also gauging the success of your blog. The more people subscribe to your RSS feeds, the greater is the popularity your blog enjoys.

But how do you encourage more people to subscribe to your RSS feed?

Essential Tools for Bloggers

Jan 24, 2007 No Comments »

OK, this is not to dissuade you from blogging, but here is a list of essential tools every blogger should have and I don’t agree with most of them. The most essential tools a blogger needs are:

  • A good blogging software (WordPress, for instance)
  • A reliable host to run your blog coupled with a domain, of course.
  • A good wordpressor; if you cannot afford MS Word, you can download OpenOffice.org that is as good as MS Office. And there are plenty of Web 2.0 word processors available online, for instance Google Docs, Zoho or AjaxWrite.

Of course if you want to run a photo blog then you need a decent digital camera and an image editor. But it beats me why you need expensive software like Dreamweaver and Photoshop CSS to run a successful blog. And why on earth you need an LCD screen?

A quintessential aspect of blogging is that anybody with a net connection can do it. You don’t need expensive gadget, you don’t need expensive software. Yes, you must have lots of things to say :-).

Performancing Partners Ends

Jan 24, 2007 No Comments »

Performancing was perhaps the first online traffic analytics tool I ever used for my blogs. I don’t know if the tool is still working, but it let you track your individual blog posts and even helped your gauged what posts earned you the most AdSense revenue.

Recently Performancing (or one of its components) was first acquired and then not acquired by PayPerPost and I think it must have been a big setback. They had even moved their FireFox Blog Editor plugin to a new domain.

According to a recent post on their blog they are closing down Performancing Partners, are program to sell advertising through their users’ blogs. They didn’t get enough funding, according to the blog post.

To Protect Freedom of Speech

Jan 20, 2007 No Comments »

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo!, along with some other search engine companies, in collaboration with a few NGOs, are going to develop a code of conduct to promote freedom of expression and privacy right, according to a PC World blog post titled Google, Microsoft, and Others Agree to Code of Conduct. All these companies in the past (they continue to do so) have sold their souls to gain markets in repressive countries like China. Google hides all the search results the Chinese authorities don’t like.
