Passive and Active Blogging Income

Talking about blog income (I’m talking about myself here) at this stage sounds funny but I just now read an interesting post at Problogger.net where Darren discusses what’s passive blogging income and what’s active blogging income. Passive blogging income is when you don’t update your blog as frequently as you used to and your archives fetch enough traffic from the search engines to generate you decent ad revenue. Darren rightly says it doesn’t work for a long period simply because the search engines prefer websites and blogs that are constantly updated.

Selling Microcontent
Jan 28, 2007 No Comments »
Good news for content publishers, at least those who want to sell content online at very low prices, say $0.01 or $0.10 every month. Microsoft is developing a micropayment system that will enable smaller content publishers to charge without incurring deterring expenses per transaction. To buy microcontent you won’t have to pay using your credit card. It’ll just be a one-click affair.
I said “good news” because there are really some talented content producers who cannot charge the consumers just because it’s a great hassle. And consumers too would like to pay for quality content. I think it’s depressing to think that people want to read your stuff just because it’s free and if they have to pay even $0.10 per month they won’t read it :-).

Don’t Just Read, Write Too
Jan 26, 2007 2 Comments »
This is a problem faced by non-blogging writers too, but non-blogging writers, most often, are paid writers and sooner or later they have to turn in their work. A big problem with most of the bloggers is that they read a lot about how to “blog successfully” but rarely write themselves.
Here’s a valuable tip: every blog is unique. So success formula for one blog doesn’t necessarily work on another. Visit other blogs for ideas, interactions and insights (make that “things to link to”) but don’t waste too much time reading the how-to’s. You’ve got limited time so use it productively.
Let’s say you’ve assigned two hours to blogging, everyday. Assign more than an hour to writing, and the remaining to reading. And, as the saying goes on the Internet, scan, don’t read, unless it is VERY important and you have to assimilate every single word of the stuff you are reading. If you are not used to, then develop the habit.
Happy writing!
