How much should I charge for copywriting?

Sep 03, 2006 3 Comments »

Recently I removed from the main page the link to my writing rates. There were two primary reasons: 70% clients anyway ask me in their first query, How much do you charge?

And even if they viewed the writing rates page, they still wanted quotes for their specific requirements, and it does make sense — people do have their unique needs and it means the rates should also be unique.

I’ve realized you cannot quantify services like copywriting and content writing. Every need differs from the other. My writing rates page was unprofitable for me too — the clients would chose a category bearing the lowest quote and then gradually get me doing the higher valued work without paying for it. With the rates page removed, I can quote according to the work demanded; I can decide what I actually want to charge now.

Will I be, consequently, overcharging or undercharging clients according to my preferences? No I won’t. No matter how confident I am these days, I know how much I can charge right now. I neither believe in undercharging nor overcharging. I prefer charging the exact amount I feel I should get.

My blogging clients too send some very innovative post headers for their blogs.

Should your website sales copy be long or short?

Most insist, including well-established copywriters (I wish I could charge the way they do!) that website sales copy should be short and crisp. Come to the point: highlight the features/benefits in as little words as possible and then ask your visitor to by the product or select the service. I don’t think so.

Why blogs are rapidly catching up

Sep 02, 2006 No Comments »

Apart from the fact that for some people blogging is highly addictive, the big reason why blogging is catching up so fast is that it is so easy to create a blog. Take for instance WordPress, Blogger or MovableType (these are the only blogging tools/software I’ve used to blog). Blogger is the easiest among them. Just create an account, set up a blog, choose a fancy template and start publishing your revolutionary thoughts in a jiffy. Using WordPress is a bit difficult (not if you use this version) because you have to register your own domain, arrange for the hosting service, upload the PHP files, create the database using your host’s control panel and then upload templates/themes that you want to use.
