Working on your own

Dec 14, 2005 No Comments »

I generally don’t cross-post but this entry is relevant to both the blogs.

Working on your own has its own unique problems. Yesterday, despite having loads of assignments to complete, most of the time I was struggling with my PC. I usually keep my PC connected to the Internet and then use a cable to share the connection on my laptop. My hardware guy warned me that any day my hard disk could crash so I should get a new one (I had 40 GB, now I have 80 GB). He fixed the new as well as the old hard disk so that I could gradually transfer all the files to the new hard disk at my own convenience (but very soon, he said).

Ever since I have moved to this new house I have been facing problems with my DSL modem. It stops working, just stops, and then after a few rounds of switching-on-and-switching-off and a few taps here and a few taps there it starts working. So yesterday while I was trying to get both laptop and PC communicate to each other, in between either the connection kept disappearing or both the machines wouldn’t find each other. Eventually, by late evening I was able to access the Internet through my laptop from the PC.

When you work on your own every tiny problem becomes your own problem. Had I been working in a company, I could have simply moved to another machine to continue with my work while the maintenance guys would have taken care of the problem.

Ah! Another day of catching up with yesterday. But I love working on my own :-).

Optimize before designing

Dec 11, 2005 No Comments »

The most important thing to take care of before sitting down to designing your website is its optimization. As a content writer who writes optimized content as a living, I can tell you how true this is. Almost every week I get emails from prospective clients who have dazzling websites that either generate little traffic or generate zero sales despite having a good product or service. So what are they doing wrong? Don’t people want their goods and services? They do. It’s just that, even when they are driving traffic to their websites, they are getting all the wrong traffic.

Website optimization is not only good for your search engine ranking, it is also good for your visitors. Now, most SEO companies confuse SEO writing with keyword-stuffing. Keyword-stuffing does nothing but make your website content seem silly. The optimized content should be written in such a manner that its syntax attracts the search engine robots, and its meaning conveys the right message to your visitors. Right kind of optimization get you the right kind of traffic that generates the right kind of business for you. If you have a cool looking website and your clients or customers cannot make any sense of it, what’s the use. Make your website to please your visitors, not to please you, and to please your visitors, you need to get your website optimized. An article at AllBusiness.com titled Optimizing before Building Your Site explains the need to draw up an optimization plan before you start working upon the layout of your website.

Writing Articles for Thousands of Readers

Dec 05, 2005 No Comments »

Writing articles can be incredibly valuable to your business.

Articles help establish your expertise and give you credibility. A bunch of well edited articles can be compiled into a product for sale. Articles can get your name in front of your target market repeatedly.

In this article, I’ll review what you need to do to get your articles seen by as many people as possible.

1) Length and outline–Ideally, your article should be from 500-1000 words. Article submission services prefer this length, and your reader will as well. Use an outline at first to make it simpler. I discussed some popular outlines in the last issue of Service Business Strategies. An easy, clear outline starts with an introduction, followed by 3-5 key points, and concludes with a recap of your main points.

Writing while on the move

Dec 05, 2005 No Comments »

I wonder how people write such good stuff while moving around here and there. I haven’t been able to settle down yet in the new apartment because my mother is alone so we had to come here stay with her during her eye operation. Luckily my net connection still works here so I have done lots of work sitting on this cramped desk — my work desk and my server PC are in the new apartment.
