Optimizing for Online Copywriter
Apr 21, 2005 No Comments »
While going through my Google AdWords keywords list I noticed there are a few key phrases that do not show up in the regular search results. For instance, content writer and website content writer brings up my website on the first page of the search results but it figures nowhere for online copywriter. I feel many people are searching for online copywriter whence they are actually looking for a web page content writer.
This’ll be a nice exercise. I’ve created a new page that’ll optimize for online copywriter. As soon as it begins to show up on the first page I’ll declare it here.
Creating A Search Engine Copywriting Plan

Search engine copywriting has become an extremely important part of the overall search engine optimization process. However, in addition, search engine copywriting has developed into a misunderstood craft.
Shoving keywords in anywhere they can possibly go is not considered search engine copywriting. The process is more defined than that. Successful SEO copywriting takes planning. Any half-hearted efforts at writing copy geared strictly toward the engines will usually result in a decline in your customer’s experience at your site.
What’s the best way to write SEO copy? Starting with a plan is always a good idea. Keep in mind, these are guidelines of techniques that can be used *IF* they make sense for your site visitors. I never recommend writing solely for the search engines. In the case of search engine copywriting, the customer is truly #1.

My own website

I was just wondering…I have not optimized one of my own websites for the search engines. I’m talking about Bytesworth.com. This website is full of good content, and it gets lots of traffic…but it hardly generates any business worth mentioning.
I’ve hit upon this interesting idea. I’m going to optimize one of its pages for the term “web developer php” as I love to program in PHP. I’ll track the progress on this blog and report on how I’m trying to improve its search engine ranking.
Ethics of doing business

Today I saw in the newspaper a photograph with a caption: Cruel colors of Benetton. It was accompanied by a news regarding how Benetton gets sheep wool from Australian farmers who treat their sheep cruelly. Since I come across many businesses and collaborators, I constantly need to think whether I should be doing business with these individuals or not. I don’t have very strict guidelines for myself — currently I’m working on a website whose webmaster plans to sell porn CDs from there. But I have strong issues with people who maltreat animals. A few months ago I severed my business ties with a person who had gone on a hunting safari (I couldn’t care less if hunting is legal in his country).
We were chatting and he boasted, “During my recent hunting vacation I killed 3 deers.”
I was disgusted and my hands froze. Although we were discussing a big website project (website for a diamond mine in Africa) and the deal could have meant lots of money, I couldn’t have done it at the cost of my self-respect. It would have been below my dignity to collaborate with a person who kills animals for leisure or fun.
I have never regretted that decision and a few more decisions like that.
Relevance of relevant content

Search engines actively and regularly seek new content. As more and more search engine algorithms evolve into complex, human-centric logics, they seek content that is relevant to the search conducted by the surfer. They also want to present freshly updated content to their users. Google sends out its ‘freshbot’ spider to gather and index new material from all the sites which offer it.
But why do search engines want to offer fresh, relevant content to their users? The search engine market is growing at a great pace, and Google has proven that if a search engine gives its users what they are looking for, surfers use that search engine again and again, meaning more business for the search engine. If you found the same old content whenever you conducted searches, would you use that search engine with regularity? No. You’ll go where you can find something new, something fresh, something relevant. These days search engines take their users very seriously. They take the content of your website very seriously therefore.
Since all searches (at least 98%) are text based searches, it matters a lot what text your web pages contain. For instance, if you’re selling desktop images for mobile phone users, you should have lots of information on “desktop images for mobile phones” scattered all over your website. These words shouldn’t be splattered around nonsensically…they should appear in the proper context, only then they are relevant. The search engine robots are so smart that they can recognize the needless spamming of keywords and key phrases. They have developed this strange knack for knowing which pages shows relevant content and which does not.
