Combining Links and Content

When you write for a web page there is a great attraction for using hyper-links. Even I cannot resist the temptation of linking different pages to a single paragraph just to encapsulate lots of information in short text.

Although a web page is mostly written in a hyper-text language, it does not mean we use hyper-links at the drop of a hat. They are extremely useful, no denying that, but an over-dosage can end up utterly distracting the reader.

Just as a side note, when I talk of links, I don’t mean the navigation links. Whenever I mention hyper-links, they are the links, for instance:

Big Company? Duh!

Nov 02, 2004 No Comments »

While having breakfast I was watching the share market updates and they flashed the performance of Jindal Stainless Steel Company — http://www.jindal.com. The stock of the company is improving and it is expanding rapidly.

About two years ago I wrote content for their website. They liked the content, approved it, and their website developer put it on their web pages. When settling the bill, they deducted Rs. 1,500/- (roughly, $33 at the current rate of Rs. 45.50 per US dollar) because I had omitted a section! Upon asked, their accountant couldn’t figure out what section I had omitted. One of the Jindal sons who so decently and professionally interacted with me while I was working on the content, was available no more. Since I was working in GE as an instructional designer and was busy with a project, I didn’t have time to pursue the matter further. But it certainly left a bad taste. Rs. 1,500 is not a big amount. You go for an evening dinner and it is a part of the total bill. I guess that’s how these companies become big — by pilfering small amounts.

On the other hand, I wrote content for http://www.revasolutions.com and forgot that I had to take Rs. 3,000 from them. After a couple of months I got a call from their office stating that I hadn’t taken the money and they needed to pay me.

I think smaller companies are more sincere because they can relate to a person who needs to struggle for every new project.
