Being a copywriter

A copywriter has to wear many hats at the same time, and I really like it. Almost everyday I get to learn new things, although after a certain stage, it seems one repeats the same message again and again. Still, I learn, relearn and de-learn regularly.
As I mentioned in my previous blog, in order to be a good copywriter, one should train to be a good writer too. One should be adept at all forms of writing. It’s like a musical instrument. Once you know how to play it, you should be able to play any tune.
Today I met an old friend of mine who is struggling to be a journalist. I told him he should keep writing about different things, different subjects, but he insisted he wanted to “specialize in feature writing.â€? He never understood my point that writing is a skill and he should keep honing it – it doesn’t matter what’s the area of expertise.

Copywriter and language

It’s very crucial how a copywriter uses the language at his / her disposal. For thousands of years language has been critical to expressing ideas and emotions.
A copywriter doesn’t have to be a literary genius to come up with an effective copy. Even if the words are simple, there should be a meaning that crosses over to the reader, creating the desired effect. I have seen many pompous copies where the copywriter has tried to showcase his / her verbal prowess, instead of conveying the intended message.
I often say if you want to be a literary genius, well, become a writer and mesmerize the litterateurs. But if you want to be a good copywriter, speak the language of your readers.

Writer as a Copywriter

How easy is it for a writer to work as a copywriter? Reputed authors like Salman Rushdie and Arundhati Roy worked as copywriters. I think as far as a good writer is concerned, for him or her, writing professional copies that bring in sales, is never a problem. After all that’s what a writer does all his or her life. If writers can herald world-altering revolutions, why can’t they make people by products and services, provided they write for them with conviction and faith?
This helps me reach at a conclusion that even if a person works just as a copywriter, he or she should concentrate on developing the skill from all aspects: copywriting, creative writing, business writing, fiction, journalistic, and for that matter, even poetry. This helps one build a character.
Whenever I’m hired as a copywriter, my clients hire me because they like my copywriting style. They never hire me because I’m a conventional copywriter.
As a writer who writes sales copies, I’m easily able to avoid clichéd language and boring sales pitch. I can converse with the reader as Amrit (it’s another matter if I’m writing as a company manager). I write in my own style, molded in the client’s needs.
